Nature activities and events happening this week 20-26 Nov 06 20 Nov (Mon): A Sungei Buloh Mudlobster's Tale I am a mudloster. My home is in the mangroves of Sungei Buloh where I live in harmony with my friends, the fishes, crabs, and many others. Want to know more about me, my friends and our home in the mangroves of Sungei Buloh? Mr Rajendran Thangayan, National Parks Board, brings you on a trip in the mangroves. Get to know the animals and plants within the mudlobster's home and learn how to identify them. Time: 3-4pm Venue : Cheng San Community Library Contact: Contact fom on the NLB website 23 Nov (Thu): WWF's Global Forest Programme - Forests for Life In this overview of WWF's Global Forest Programme - Forests for Life, Dr Duncan Pollard (Director, Global Forest Programme, WWF International) will cover why forests are important, what is happening to our forests and global trends, as well as key initiatives underway in conservation, the problems and challengers, i.e., forest conservation, forest fires and climate change. An important topic will be consumption issues particularly paper, soya and palm oil -- the issue is, what WWF is doing about it and what companies and consumers can do. All are welcome. Time: 11am Venue: Function Hall, Botany Centre, Singapore Botanic Gardens 25 Nov (Sat): Rediscover Singapore : Identity, Parks and Waterbodies Singapore is a small city which happens to be a country. Some people label us as a concrete jungle but did you know that there are a total of 302 parks currently under maintenance? So why the need for a Parks & Waterbodies Plan? And as we plan for the demands of future growth, how can we keep a sense of identity of places, even those beyond the city centre or beyond the ubiquitious heritage shophouse? Join Mr Colin Lauw at the Singapore City Gallery Theatrette for a talk on plans for our parks and waterbodies and places of character and identity. Limited seats only! Contact: Carol Lim Carol_LIM@ura.gov.sg 25 Nov (Sat): Birdwatching at Pulau Semakau for NSS members only This is a good time to visit Semakau for migratory birds and migrant surprises. Sreedharan leads the walk to observe resident attractions such as Great-billed Heron, Pacific Reef Egret, Malaysian Plover, etc. Sightings are possible of rare migrants such as the Chinese Egret, Oriental Pratincole, etc. Time: 7.30am, meet at the West Coast Pier (near Republic of Singapore Yacht Club.) Back to the mainland by 2pm. There is free parking at Carpark 2 off the West Coast Highway. Cost: Non-refundable $25 fee for boat and administration charge. Send your cheque to the NSS office by 15 September with the All Purpose Form. Number of persons for trip: 11 or 22 or 33. Note: Identity card or passport is mandatory for boarding. Strictly for members only, on a first-come, first-served basis. Children under 12 are not allowed (NEA regulation). To join the NSS, email contact@nss.org.sg or call 6741 2036. 25 Nov (Sat): Twilight Ramble with the Nature Ramblers for NSS members only Sutari Supari leads the walk exploring the hauntingly peaceful area around Tyersall Avenue. Interesting birds and mammals can be spotted along the quiet road and by-ways, where the sound of insects and the wind above the trees can be heard. As twilight descends, we will make our way to Bukit Brown Cemetery via the Botanic Gardens and Kheam Hock Road. We will look out for owls, nightjars, and other nocturnal creatures. If the skies are clear, we can also gaze at the stars and planets. This 8km/4hr ramble will end at Sime Road. No booking required. It is definitely not for the faint of heart or children below 12 years old! You must bring a good torch. You may also want to pack some snacks and drinks. Besides the abundant bird life, there is also other fascinating wildlife in the Reserve. more 3pm: Marine Fish Tour, a 30-minute tour introducing the fascinating fishes of Buloh. Time: 9am, 10am, 3pm, 4pm, for walk in guests, register at the Visitor Centre. Those coming with large groups are advised to pre-register. Tour duration: one to one and a half hours. Easy trails, some suitable for young children. Entry charges: $1 per adult, 50cents per child/student/senior citizen. Contact: sbwr@pacific.net.sg or call 6794 1401 25 Nov (Sat): Free Evolution Garden Tour, Singapore Botanic Gardens Journey through time with our volunteer guides in this one-hour tour. Bizarre plants, bubbling pools of hot lava and lots of other things you wouldn't expect to see in a botanic garden! Time: 9am, register at Visitor Centre Time. Register 15 minutes before the tour. Registration is on a first-come-first-served basis. Contact : Visitor Services (6471 7361) 26 Nov (Sun): Bishan Park Nature Walk for NSS members only Goh Si Guim leads this walk to explore the part of the park nearest to Lower Peirce Reservoir. Some old fig trees were retained when the area was developed for housing. Being close to the nature reserve, these trees sometimes draw wildlife out of the woods, especially when they are in fruit. The rest of the park, although pretty much manicured, is still worth exploring in this relaxing stroll. Time: 8.30am, meet at the junction of Upper Thomson Road and Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1. To join the NSS, email contact@nss.org.sg or call 6741 2036. 26 Nov (Sun): Free "Painting with Pui San" at Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve Pui San welcomes artists of all ages or anyone who wants to learn. His objective is to encourage creativity while enjoying nature at the same time. Bring along your favourite drawing or painting supplies. More about Pui San. Time: Meet 8.30am at the Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve ticketing counter (Visitor Centre). Session usually lasts until about 11am. Usual entry charges apply: $1 per adult, 50cents per child/student/senior citizen.
