Nature activities and events happening this week 21-27 Aug 06 23 Aug (Wed): Coastal Hill Forests Shawn Lum of the Plant Group gives this short presentation which highlights coastal hill forests, of which Bukit Timah remains our sole surviving example. What are "coastal hill dipterocarp forests" and what makes them worthy of being assigned to a unique forest type in the region? The talk will be followed by a walk to Bukit Timah on Sat, 26 Aug 2006. The talk is free for all members, but the Plant Group would appreciate any contribution to the Society for the furtherance of planned conservation and restoration initiatives. All are welcome. To join the NSS, email contact@nss.org.sg or call 6741 2036. 25 Aug (Fri): Zest for Nature Talk "Birdwatching with tribal children in Inhadig, a remote village" Yong Ding Li and Andrew Tay give this talk. Inhandig is a tiny village nestled amidst mossy forests on the slopes of the Mt. Kitanglad Range in Bukidnon, central Mindanao. This is home to members of the Lumad Tribe, and the surrounding highlands, their sacred ancestral domain. Led by wise, shamanistic elders, Inhandig manages several environment- friendly socio-economic projects. The forest here is also home for the spectacular Philippines monkey-eating eagle. Join the speakers as they trek together with tribal kids to search for an eaglet and other endemic birds, and their very special experiences with an indigenous culture. Come also to join in and help raise much-needed funds for an educational project for these tribal kids. All are welcome. Time: 7.30pm Venue: NSS office, 510 Geylang Road #02-05 The Sunflower. Only for NSS members Plant Walk with Shawn Lum and Plant Group. What is a hill forest, and how does Bukit Timah, with its famous hill forest, actually differ from surrounding lowland forests? What used to grow on these hills, and how can we use our knowledge of Bt Timah's flora to imagine what Singapore's hills looked like 200 years ago? Lest you think that the late starting time will make the walk too hot and uncomfortable, you'll realise the benefits of walking under a forest canopy. Aug (Sat): Free Evolution Garden Tour, Singapore Botanic GardensJourney through time with our volunteer guides in this one-hour tour. Bizarre plants, bubbling pools of hot lava and lots of other things you wouldn't expect to see in a botanic garden! Time: 9am, register at Visitor Centre Time. Register 15 minutes before the tour. Aug (Sat): Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve free guided walkYou'll see the fabulous plants and animals of the mangroves and freshwater wetlands. Besides the abundant bird life, there is also other fascinating wildlife in the Reserve. more 9am: Marine Fish Tour, a 30-minute tour introducing the fascinating fishes of Buloh. Time: 9am, 10am, 3pm, 4pm, for walk in guests, register at the Visitor Centre. Those coming with large groups are advised to pre-register. Tour duration: one to one and a half hours. Contact: For reservations and enquiries, email hantublog@gmail.com 27 Aug (Sun): Green Transport Week Carnival and the Incredible Eco-Chase To conclude Green Transport Week (GTW) a green transport carnival will be held. Build your very own green transportation from recycled materials and compete to see just how far it’ll go in the “Green Gravity Challenge”. Win attractive prizes if your winning green vehicle travels the furthest after being launched from a ramp slope. Learn how to unicycle at The Singapore Unicyclists booth and take part in activities organized by The Singapore Women’s Cycling Team. The venue will also act as the start and finish point for The Incredible Eco-Chase, an ‘Amazing Race’ type challenge, but integrating green(transport) challenges. The Incredible Eco-Chase will be played by teams of four with separate categories for organisations, schools, and an open category for the public. Minister for Transport and Second Minister for Foreign Affairs Mr Raymond Lim, will flag off contestants. Closing date for registration for the eco-chase: 16 Aug, briefing on 19 Aug. Aug (Sun): Free "Painting with Pui San" at Sungei Buloh Wetland
Reserve Pui San welcomes artists of all ages or anyone who wants to learn. His objective is to encourage creativity while enjoying nature at the same time. Bring along your favourite drawing or painting supplies. More about Pui San. Time: Meet 8.30am at the Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve ticketing counter (Visitor Centre). Session usually lasts until about 11am. Usual entry charges apply: $1 per adult, 50cents per child/student/senior citizen.
