Robinson. Prof Robinson is visiting Singapore as the International Advisor to the M.Sc (Environmental Management) Programme of the National University of Singapore. Scientists report that the trends in global environmental change are accelerating. Economic and social conditions will need to adjust to these changes, both to avoid negative impacts and to position human activity to take advantage of possible positive impacts. The techniques of environmental law are well developed to meet these tasks. Environmental law has provided the framework within which environmental technology and economics have been applied to abate air pollution, begin to curb transnational "haze", prevent further loss of fish stocks at sea, clean up water pollution, contain the spread of chemicals that carry hazards to human health, and conserve nature and natural resources. In the course of doing so, the practice of environmental law has become a core component of real estate transactions, bank financing and corporate, Environmental Management Systems (EMS) world-wide. Techniques, such as environmental impact assessment, are being refined to serve as planning tools to cope with the effects of climate change. Educating and engaging the support of the public is essential to ensuring that human societies can adapt to new environmental conditions that are emerging on the Earth.
