Nature activities and events happening this week 10-16 Jul 06 23 Jun-17 Jul: Conserving Singapore's Biodiversity Exhibition at Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve The exhibition aims to create public awareness of our local biodiversity. It comprises of a series of posters showcasing Singapore's different habitats, flora and fauna. Visitors can also pen their thoughts about conserving Singapore's nature, plants and animals. More about Singapore's biodiversity on the National Biodiversity Reference Centre website 12 Jul (Wed): Bird Chat: Argus Pheasant - A Bad Start to Bird Watching Come join Dr. Geoffrey Davison as he shares his many interesting experiences on the Argus Pheasant and Peacock-Pheasant, and what they get up to. Geoffrey spent a considerable amount of time studying these birds for his doctorate and there is no one better than him to give us this talk. "Trekking in the mangroves, I spied a Smooth otter swimming silentlythrough a river channel. Resting on sand ledge, a crocodile took in thewarm rays of the sun. Dolphins burst through the waves, sea cows grazed the sea grass offshore and turtle hatchlings struggled over sand to reach the waves and safety of the sea." Join zoologist N. Sivasothi, Research Officer, Raffles Museum of Biodiversity Research as he reveals these unbelievable scenes and more secrets of Singapore's marine life! Admission is Free. No registration required. At this workshop, Mr Tan Boon Kiat, Singapore Gardening Society will share his experience in growing orchids and provide tips on the successful cultivation of these exotic plants in our warm and dry balconies/corridors/windowsills. Participants will also be introduced to some orchids that are easy to grow in high-rise apartments. Admission is Free. No registration required. A recent study has shown that one hectare of mangroves can absorb up to 1.5 tonnes of carbon dioxide in a year about the same amount emitted by a medium sized car during a year. So do your bit to conserve our mangroves. 100 volunteers needed. This is hard but satisfying work. If you’re afraid to get muddy, your feet wet and hands dirty this is NOT an activity for you. If you’re a Teacher and want to bring students along we would need to know how many and their ages. When you book please leave your mobile number. Form a team of 3 to 5 members and pick up a set of clues at the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve Visitor Centre anytime from 10.00 am to 11.00 am. You have one hour to complete your hunt. Registration for the free plant hunt is limited to maximum of 20 people per registrant. Please register 15 minutes before the tour. Registration is on a first-come-first-served basis at the Visitor Centre. more Time: 9am, 10am, 11am and 4pm. Besides the abundant bird life, there is also other fascinating wildlife in the Reserve. more 9am: Marine Fish Tour, a 30-minute tour introducing the fascinating fishes of Buloh. Time: 9am, 10am, 3pm, 4pm, for walk in guests, register at the Visitor Centre. Those coming with large groups are advised to pre-register. Tour duration: one to one and a half hours. Easy trails, some suitable for young children. Entry charges: $1 per adult, 50cents per child/student/senior citizen.
