14 Jun (Wed): "Our Marine Heritage - Conservation and Management of Sea Turtles"

Organised by National Biodiversity Reference Centre, the speakers include Dr CH Diong (Professor, National Institute of Education, NTU), Kalthom Abdul Latiff (Deputy Director East Branch, Parks Div, NParks) and Sivasothi (Research Officer, Raffles Museum of Biodiversity Research, NUS).

Topics and issues to be covered include:
a. Current research activities on sea turtle research in Singapore.
b. Best practices on handling and reporting of turtle sightings, nesting, hatching and egg collection.
c. NParks involvement in turtle conservation - eg Year of the Turtle (YoT) committee, turtle hatchling release etc.
d. Public engagement - developing and disseminating a "national protocol" to handle sightings of turtles and nesting.
e. "Call to Action" - What do you want a NParks staff to do if he / she spots a sea turtle, turtle egg, dead turtle/marine mammal.

In addition, there will a mini-poster exhibit of photographs and Year of the Turtle posters.

Trees serve as the backbone of Singapore as a world renown Tropical Garden City. For more than 30 years, trees have been planted all over the island serving various purposes. Come join us for a guided walk through the oldest part of the Botanic Gardens where many of the trees are about as old as the Gardens (more than 140 years) itself ! Suitable for : P1 to P6

17 Jun (Sat): Marine Fishes Of Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve

Explore the waters of Sungei Buloh Besar during high tide and the number of fishes that swim in it will amaze you. Join Mr Rajendran Thangayan, of the National Parks Board as he shares his observations on the marine life in the waters of Sungei Buloh and pick up a tip or two on how to identify and differentiate the fishes. This is a parent-child programme involving some hands-on activities. Children must be between 6 to 12 years old. Limited to 15 parent-child pairs. Admission is on a first-come-first-served basis.

17 Jun (Sat): Plant Walk at Hindhede Nature Park

Do you know that we have a Brazil Nut Tree in park? Do you also know that the wood of Jelutong is used to make pencils? Let our volunteers share with you stories about our green allies in Hindhede Nature Park. The walk is conducted by the Building and Environment Green Volunteers from Ngee Ann Polytechnic's School of Engineering and the Central Nature Reserve volunteers.

For enquiries and registration, please contact the Outreach Officers of Central Nature Reserve at 65545127 three days before the event. If your group is small (less than 5), simply turn up on that day!

Time: First walk: 10.00am; Second walk: 10.30am

Explore the beauty and diversity of orchids at the Singapore Botanic Gardens with volunteer guides in this one-hour tour. Please register 15 minutes before the tour. Registration is on a first-come-first-served basis at the Visitor Centre. more

Tour duration: one to one and a half hours. Easy trails, some suitable for young children.

18 Jun (Sun): Free Briskwalk 2006

Join the Habitat Group Briskwalkers for a vigorous walk from MacRitchie to Bukit Timah hill. The primary motivation is exercise but the bonus is that you get to start the day with Mother Nature! The air is fresh, and the morning sights and sounds are awaiting your discovery.

All are welcome, but you should be reasonably fit. The pace is fast, and we will only be stopping for the occasional gem. We hope to get you out of Bukit Timah by 9.30am, for a hearty breakfast. You will find your Sunday just beginning, and feeling more awake than ever!
