Nature activities and events happening this week 29 May - 4 Jun 06 30 May (Tue): Prawn Watch at Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve A hands-on introduction to traditional prawn farming. Along the way you'll see the fabulous plants and animals of the mangroves and freshwater wetlands. Besides the abundant bird life, there is also other fascinating wildlife in the Reserve. more Time: 9am, register at the Visitor Centre. Tour duration: one to one and a half hours. How did plants evolve and adapt over time? Come and explore the Evolution Garden and you will get to discover endangered plant species, see models of extinct plants and real fossils too! Suitable for : P1 to P6 More details on the SBG website Time: 9.30-10.30a.m Fee: $5.00 per child/parent 2 Jun (Fri): Charity Movie Premier of 'Fireflies : River of Light' The Singapore Environment Council and The Singapore Film Society with support from The Ministry of the Environment and water resources, National Environment Agency and PUB present. 'Fireflies: River of Light', by Hiroshi Sugawara. A true story by Hajime, an elementary school teacher who brought his class on an excursion to the Yamaguchi River and made a remark “wouldn’t it be beautiful to see fireflies dancing here”. His class took up the challenge against all odds. The film is in essence about the beauty of things created when people band together with a common purpose of improving their surroundings, and hence their community. For more than 30 years, trees have been planted all over the island serving various purposes. Come join us for a guided walk through the oldest part of the Botanic Gardens where many of the trees are about as old as the Gardens (more than 140 years) itself ! In 2004, the Potter family set off on a one year expedition sailing their boat 'Jocara' around the Indian Ocean, visiting places like Krakatoa, Cocos Keeling, Zanzibar, Seychelles, Chagos and more. Come join Caroline as she shares some of her experiences, with images from above and underwater. Read the online diary of the whole voyage at www.jocara.net. The Blue Water Volunteers' ReefExhibits will also be at the talk with friendly volunteers eager to share our amazing local marine life with you. So come by early to check it out! So you will encounter a wide range of wildlife from forest to aquatic creatures. And enjoy wonderful panaromas of waters surrounding by luxuriant forest. Shaded by the forest, the walk is pleasantly cool. more Time: 9.30am and 10.30am. Meet at Casuarina Entrance of the trail along Old Upper Thomson Road. Tour duration: about one and a half hours. Bizarre plants, bubbling pools of hot lava and lots of other things you wouldn't expect to see in a botanic garden! Time: 9am, register at Visitor Centre Time. Register 15 minutes before the tour. Part of this event is the 'Nature in the City' photo competition; $500-$200 in prizes. more details closing date 28 May Time: 10am to 8pm Venue: Toa Payoh HDB Hub 4 Jun (Sun): Free Briskwalk 2006 Join the Habitat Group Briskwalkers for a vigorous walk from MacRitchie to Bukit Timah hill. The primary motivation is exercise but the bonus is that you get to start the day with Mother Nature! The air is fresh, and the morning sights and sounds are awaiting your discovery. All are welcome, but you should be reasonably fit. The pace is fast, and we will only be stopping for the occasional gem. We hope to get you out of Bukit Timah by 9.30am, for a hearty breakfast. You will find your Sunday just beginning, and feeling more awake than ever! For more information and how to register, check out the briskwalk website Time: Meet 6.45am at MacRitchie Reservior Carpark 4 Jun (Sun): Ang Mo Kio Town Garden West Walk: "The Limits of Plant Dispersal and Forest Regeneration" Shawn Lum and the Plant Group, armed with a guide to secondary forest trees, will try to find out what plants have colonised the former rubber plantation found at the park, and in what numbers. We'll try to build upon the earlier walk at MacRitchie Nature Park to see how important proximity to a seed source is to colonisation. Time: Meet 9.30am in front of the Ang Mo Kio Community Library.
