Nature activities and events happening this week 15-21 May 06 17 May (Wed): Bird Chat on Sunbirds and Flowerpeckers Lim Kim Keang and Jimmy Chew share with you the life and ecology of these diminutive but colourful birds and be mesmerized by these jewels of the forest through the eyes of Jimmy. Flowerpeckers and sunbirds belong to the family Nectariniidae and can be found in teh Asian, African and Australasian regions. Kim Keang and Jimmy will focus on species found in S. E. Asia. A T. rex named SUE and Friends!" event, Philip Fraley (Vice President and Founder, Phil Fraley Productions) share about how Sue is built, displayed and transported More details on the Dinosaurs website Time: 2.30-4pm Venue: Annex Auditorium, Singapore Science Centre Contact: specialevents@science.edu.sg 20 May (Sat): Pulau Ubin Ramble with the Nature Ramblers Open to NSS members only Led by Yap Chung Kui, the ramble starts at Ubin jetty to Kampung Melayu and will end at Noordin Beach. Will savour the rustic charms of the countryside and see Malay kampungs, fish ponds, coconut groves and fruit orchards. Booking not required. Please bring rainwear, insect repellent (natural type is best), waterbottle, binoculars, notebook, pencil, camera (optional). Boat fare (return) to be borne by participants. More about Pulau Ubin. Please register 15 minutes before the tour. Registration is on a first-come-first-served basis at the Visitor Centre. more Time: 9am, 10am, 11am and 4pm. Register 15 mins beforehand at Visitor Centre Contact: Visitor Services (6471 7361) Admission fees to the National Orchid Garden applies. Adults - $5; Students - $1; Senior Citizens (Above 60 years) - $1; Children (Below 12 years) free. 20 May (Sat): Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve free guided walk You'll see the fabulous plants and animals of the mangroves and freshwater wetlands. Besides the abundant bird life, there is also other fascinating wildlife in the Reserve. more 9am: Marine Fish Tour, a 30-minute tour introducing the fascinating fishes of Buloh. Time: 9am, 10am, 3pm, 4pm, for walk in guests, register at the Visitor Centre. Those coming with large groups are advised to pre-register. Tour duration: one to one and a half hours. Easy trails, some suitable for young children. Entry charges: $1 per adult, 50cents per child/student/senior citizen. Pereira, Singapore Coordinator of "Elefriends" Today there are close to 500,000 African elephants and only about 50,000 Asian elephants. This drastic decline in the Asian elephant population is mainly due to deforestation, poaching and bad urban planning. Join us at this talk to learn more about the plight of the Asian elephants and their future. Admission is free. All are welcomed. No registration is required. Time: 3-4pm. It makes for a relaxing stroll around this 'countryside' among the hills of the southern part of the island. Come and discover the flora and fauna residing here in almost total seclusion. Time: Meet 8am at the junction of Hyderabad and Alexandra Roads. Contact: More details about the Nature Society (Singapore). Come for birdwatching and a casual stroll at this Southern Island. Enjoy the open sky and sea -- far away from our usual haunts on the mainland. Resident attractions: Great-billed Heron, Pacific Reef Egret, Malaysian Plover etc. Return by 2pm. Return to mainland by 2pm. Free parking at Carpark 2 off West Coast Highway. Non-refundable $20 fee for boat and admin. Send cheque to NSS office by 12 May with AP Form. Number of persons for trip: 11 or 22 or 33. NRIC or Passport mandatory for boarding. Strictly for members only - first come first served basis. Children under 12 are not allowed (NEA regulations). Time: 7.30am at West Coast Pier (near Rep. of S'pore Yacht Club.)
