Nature activities and events happening this week 12-18 Dec 05 27 Oct 05 - 17 Jan 06: ‘La Terre Vue du Ciel’- Earth from above The French Embassy and the Singapore Environment Council present the world-renowned photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand’s exhibition ‘La Terre Vue du Ciel’ or ‘Earth from Above’. Held on Orchard Road stretching across Liat Towers, Far East Shopping Centre, Hilton Hotel and Forum Galleria, this is the first of its kind in South East Asia. The exhibition is an aerial portrait of our planet captured in 120 breathtaking photos. Dec 05: Precipitous - Remembering Dec 26A photo exhibition capturing the life and heartbeat that was before the 26 Dec 04 tsunami. Debby Ng, freelance photographer and established environmental and animal protection activist, took these images before the tsunami. At that time, she didn't know if the people in her pictures were still alive. She believes that until we recognize what existed in these places of tragedy, we will not realize what was truly lost. Debby is also author of the Hantu Blog. Contact: email form on the Heartware website or call 6327 4414 14 Dec (Wed): Talk on the current Avian Flu outbreak and its effect on birdwatchers Dr Wee Yeow Chin leads this discussion. The avian flu has been raging throughout the region for some years now. There is great fear that once the H5N1 virus jumps species, and it has done so in a few cases, it may mutate to make it possible to spread from human to human. Should this happen, there would be a worldwide pandemic. There are those who blame the migratory birds for spreading the viruses. Certain countries have already culled wild birds in an effort to contain the spread of the disease. What are the facts? Are migratory birds really spreading the avian flu? How does this affect wild bird populations, especially the migratory birds that visit Singapore? Is culling the answer? And what is NSS's stand on this? Dec (Thu): Children's Recycled Tree Workshop By the Environmental Challenge Organisation (ECO). Learn how to make the Christmas tree that was presented to the Mayor during the Giving Tree Launch. Make one yourself too and give this to someone special. Be sure that more than the gift will touch them. Your heart will too. Pre registration is not required and a donations are encouraged to help cover for the materials provided. We are looking at having about 15 participants. An adult must accompany kids below 12. Why do different forest plants have different kinds of fruits? How are they dispersed? Design your own fruit that can travel the furthest. Ever wonder what the cane is made up of, or the basket, or the mat? What else did we use from the forest for use in our daily lives? Reserve Pui San welcomes artists of all ages or anyone who wants to learn. His objective is to encourage creativity while enjoying nature at the same time.
