Nature activities and events happening this week 5-11 Dec 05 27 Oct 05 - 17 Jan 06: ‘La Terre Vue du Ciel’- Earth from above The French Embassy and the Singapore Environment Council present the world-renowned photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand’s exhibition ‘La Terre Vue du Ciel’ or ‘Earth from Above’. Held on Orchard Road stretching across Liat Towers, Far East Shopping Centre, Hilton Hotel and Forum Galleria, this is the first of its kind in South East Asia. The exhibition is an aerial portrait of our planet captured in 120 breathtaking photos. Debby Ng, freelance photographer and established environmental and animal protection activist, took these images before the tsunami. At that time, she didn't know if the people in her pictures were still alive. She believes that until we recognize what existed in these places of tragedy, we will not realize what was truly lost. Debby is also author of the Hantu Blog. More about Debby Time: 11am-9pm Venue: epSITE - The Epson Imaging Gallery, 501 Orchard Road #03-18/19, Wheelock Place Contact: Debby Ng at torva.anser@gmail.com 6 Dec (Tue): Young Naturalist Passport (YNP) Camp at Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve Limited to 40 children between the age of 6-12 years old, this one day camp encompasses a series of fun-filled and educational indoor and outdoor learning of the wetlands and nature conservation issues through worksheets, nature walks and hands-on activities. Children will earn a striking cloth badge for every completed category of activity. Not only will they take back all their ‘hands on’ craftwork and activities, but they will take home a whole new world of knowledge about nature and wonderful memories of their time here and new found friendships with their campmates! Each participant needs to purchase a young naturalist passport at 50 cents. Registration of $5 is applicable, and cheques will be returned upon completion of the camp. The fee will be donated to the SBWR education fund if the child fails to turn up for the camp upon registration and confirmation. Admission charges (50cents per child) apply. We will proceed to the "desert" of Singapore - the vast reclaimed land of Changi. Many migrants pass through Changi during the migratory season. Expect to see different species of shorebirds, terns and also various grassland birds. A "must-see" site for all aspiring shorebird watchers. Do you also know that the wood of Jelutong is used to make pencils? Let our volunteers share with you stories about our green allies in Hindhede Nature Park. This activity is conducted by the Building and Environment Green Volunteers from Ngee Ann Polytechnic’s School of Engineering and the Central Nature Reserve volunteers. Right in the heart of the city, within minutes of Orchard Road, this is the oldest remnant of rainforest in Singapore! more Time: 9am, 10am, 11am, 4pm; Register 15 minutes before the tour at the Visitor Centre. Tour duration: one hour. Suitable for young children. A special Mandarin version of this tour is at 4pm. Besides the abundant bird life, there is also other fascinating wildlife in the Reserve. more 9am: Free Marine Fish Guided Walk at Sungei Buloh introducing you to the fabulous fishes of the Reserve. Time: 9am, 10am, 3pm, 4pm, for walk in guests, register at the Visitor Centre. Those coming with large groups are advised to pre-register. Tour duration: one to one and a half hours. Easy trails, some suitable for young children. Entry charges: $1 per adult, 50cents per child/student/senior citizen. This is a good period for viewing migratory birds and resident attractions like the Pacific Reef Egret, Great Billed Heron, Little Tern, Malaysian Plover etc. Free parking at Carpark 2 off the West Coast Highway. Number of persons required for trip: 11 or 22 or 33. Identity card or passport mandatory for boarding. Strictly for members only - 1st come 1st served basis. Time: 7.30am at the West Coast Pier (near Rep of Singapore Yacht Club.) Return at 1.00pm. Cost: Non-refundable $25 fee for boat & admin. Send AP Form and cheque to NSS office by 2 Dec.
