Nature activities and events happening this week 28 Nov - 4 Dec 05 27 Oct 05 - 17 Jan 06: ‘La Terre Vue du Ciel’- Earth from above The French Embassy and the Singapore Environment Council present the world-renowned photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand’s exhibition ‘La Terre Vue du Ciel’ or ‘Earth from Above’. Held on Orchard Road stretching across Liat Towers, Far East Shopping Centre, Hilton Hotel and Forum Galleria, this is the first of its kind in South East Asia. The exhibition is an aerial portrait of our planet captured in 120 breathtaking photos. Contact: mewr_sgp@mewr.gov.sg 30 Nov (Wed): Introduction to Bird Ecology This talk is part of the "Why Do Birds Do What They Do?" series organized by the newly formed Bird Ecology Study Group. The speaker R. Subaraj has been with the Society since the 80's. He founded the Vertebrate Study Group (VSG) in the early 90's and became its first Chairperson. He is now actively involved with the BESGroup. A keen bird watcher since the early 80's, he has accumulated a wealth of information on bird ecology. His talk will feature basic and historical aspects of bird ecology - the inter-dependency of birds and environment, plus future plans of the new subgroup such as studying breeding behaviour - from nest to eggs to fledglings. To join the NSS, email contact@nss.org.sg or call 6741 2036. 1-31 Dec 05: Precipitous - Remembering Dec 26 A photo exhibition capturing the life and heartbeat that was before the 26 Dec 04 tsunami. Debby Ng, freelance photographer and established environmental and animal protection activist, took these images before the tsunami. At that time, she didn't know if the people in her pictures were still alive. She believes that until we recognize what existed in these places of tragedy, we will not realize what was truly lost. Debby is also author of the Hantu Blog. Although formally recognized as part of Malesia, the Island of New Guinea has very high rates of endemism (80%). The talk will cover a hypothetical transect from the crocodile infested mangroves to the permanent glaziers on the summit of Mount Jaya. It will give the listener an insight into the fascinating plants of this Island. The author Gavin Souter appropriately called New Guinea "The Last Unknown". This talk will be illustrated with colorful slides of the plants of New Guinea and its unique vegetation. The speaker is Professor Robert Johns, New Guinea Research Programme Botanical Research Institute of Texas. So you will encounter a wide range of wildlife from forest to aquatic creatures. And enjoy wonderful panaromas of waters surrounding by luxuriant forest. Shaded by the forest, the walk is pleasantly cool. more Time: 9.30am and 10.30am. Meet at Casuarina Entrance of the trail along Old Upper Thomson Road. Tour duration: about one and a half hours. Besides the abundant bird life, there is also other fascinating wildlife in the Reserve. more 4pm: Free Marine Fish Guided Walk at Sungei Buloh introducing you to the fabulous fishes of the Reserve. Time: 9am, 10am, 3pm, 4pm, for walk in guests, register at the Visitor Centre. Those coming with large groups are advised to pre-register. Tour duration: one to one and a half hours. Easy trails, some suitable for young children. Entry charges: $1 per adult, 50cents per child/student/senior citizen.
