Nature activities and events happening this week

4-10 Jul 05

5 Jul (Tue): Free talk on "Fruit for Thought : Is there really less fruit available for animals in the Asian-Tropics compared to the Neotropics?"

In the tropics, animals are important to plants for the dispersal of seeds. Conversely, fruit resources provided by plants, as reward to to animals for dispersal services, form an important food resource for many vertebrate species. We know that there are regional variations in the diversity of fruit-eating animals in the Amazons, Central Africa and Malesia.

It is hypothesized that the lower diversity of fruit-eating animals in the African and Asian tropics compared to the Amazons is due to differences in fruit supply to animals. Dr Johanna Choo (Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey) tested this hypothesis by comparing the fruit resource availability and fruit-eating bird diversity in a site in Sarawak and a site in the Peruvian Amazon.

All are welcome!

9-10 Jul (Sat-Sun): 6th Mid-year Bird Census by the Nature Society (Singapore)
open only to NSS members

Happily, we are into the sixth year of this census on Singapore’s wild bird population. Unlike the other censuses which are all conducted over a single day, this census has been extended to two days to allow birdwatchers to cover their backyards, neighbourhood parks or home patches. The ever-changing landscape and deterioration and clearance of bird habitats are all cause for concern. Such censuses have assisted us to formulate conservation proposals and provide hard data to substantiate them. Helpers are needed for site counts which will be led by an experienced birdwatcher. Please let us know which day you are available. Even better if you can make it for both days. If you can help, please contact the coordinator Lim Kim Seng at Tel: 63695072 or email him at denislim@starhub.net.sg before 1 Jul.
