Nature activities and events happening this week 17-23 Jan 05 22 Jan (Sat): The 6th Singapore Environment Lecture by Professor Gustave Speth "The Crisis of the Global Environment: How Real? How Urgent? What Must Be Done?" Professor Gustave Speth is Dean, Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. A futurist and scholar, professor Speth has published over 100 journal articles and books including Worlds Apart: Globalization and the Environment and Red Sky at Morning detailing an insightful analysis of the status the Earth's ecological systems and ways that major issues can be addressed on all levels - international, national, local, and individual. The lecture assesses the seriousness of major global-scale environmental threats. While examining the approaches that have been adopted thus far the lecture looks at what is succeeding and what its not and proposes an 8-fold path to a sustainable future. The lecture will also encompass issues grappling with poverty and population pressures to technology and economic forces to human values and motivations. Contact: sbwr@pacific.net.sg or call 6794 1401 22 Jan (Sat): More wild (and not so wild) flowers – a stroll through the Singapore Botanic Gardens with NSS Open only to NSS members and associates With Shawn Lum and the Plant Group, this walk will continue with the theme “wildflowers”, but instead of the semi-tamed verdure of Pulau Ubin, we opt instead for the more organised beauty of the Botanic Gardens. The emphasis on this walk will be to master the characteristics of a few families of herbaceous plants, such as the legumes, composites, mints and others that contribute a large proportion of our local wildflower diversity. Bring a mat if you’d like to relax in the Gardens afterwards and enjoy the sunset. Time: 3.30pm meet at the Botanic Gardens Visitor Centre Contact: More details about the Nature Society (Singapore). This is a good time to look for wintering birds like the Forest Wagtail, Arctic Warbler, and maybe the elusive Ferruginous Flycatcher! We’ll also be looking out for our resident birds like Asian Fairy Bluebird, Blue-winged Leafbird and Short-tailed Babbler. Time: 7.30 am.
