ON THIS WEEK?! Nature activities and events happening this week 9-15 Aug 2004 14 Aug (Sat): Cashew Heights Nature Niche Walk for Kids and Adults Time: 3pm. Open only to NSS members and associates The Nature Society (Singapore)'s Education Group will bring you closer to nature on a specially arranged visit to this green oasis that is part of the Cashew Heights Condominium. Besides mature trees, herbs and food plants, this little park will surprise us with glimpses of our native fauna. Places are limited, so please register by sending an email to Vilma at vdroza@nie.edu.sg and to receive details on the meeting point. Contact: More details about the Nature Society (Singapore). To join the NSS, email contact@nss.org.sg or call 6741 2036. 14 Aug (Sat): Free guided walk at Botanic Gardens Rainforest Trail Time: 9am, 10am, 11am, 4pm You'll see giant rainforest trees and learn about them and the other plants and animals that they shelter on this one-hour tour. Register 15 minutes before the tour at the Visitor Centre. More details about the trail and about the walk on the SBG website. There is now a special Mandarin version of this tour at 4pm. Contact: Visitor Services, 64717361 or NPARKS_SBG_Visitor_Services@NPARKS.GOV.SG 14 Aug (Sat): Free guided walk at Sensory Trail, Pulau Ubin Time: 10am sharp Free 1-1 and a half hour guided walk by the Green Volunteers Network. Use all your senses to appreciate and learn about fascinating plants. Meet 10am sharp at Changi Point jetty (under the big angsana tree nearest to the jetty). More details about the trail. PRE-REGISTRATION IS NECESSARY for this event. Bookings are on a first come first serve basis, up to a max of 25. Meet at the Visitor Centre. Usual entry charges apply: $1 per adult, 50cents per child /student/senior citizen. More details Contact: sbwr@pacific.net.sg or call 6794 1401 14 Aug (Sat): "Civil Society and the Environment in Singapore" Time: 10am-12noon at Executive Room 5, SDE3, Level 4 A talk organised by the National University of Singapore by Howard Shaw Executive Director, Singapore Environment Council. He will highlight the changing role of civil society in local environmental protection efforts and formation of environmental policies. Mr. Shaw will speak of the role of the Council and other civic groups and NGOs in Singapore in contributing to the discussion of environment issues, building environmental awareness, and enhancing environmental education. Meet at the junction of Sembawang and Nee Soon Roads Open only to NSS members and associates Yap Chung Kui, a Bird Group committee member, will lead us at this rather remote and obscure part of Singapore. This place still harbor some surprising finds, such as the Rose-ringed, Long-tailed and Red-breasted Parakeets which thrive in these woods. To join the NSS, email contact@nss.org.sg or call 6741 2036. 15 Aug (Sun): Pedal Ubin - a free guided tour on wheels Time: 8.30am Have you every wondered how Ubin got its name? How about stories of the German girl, the monk who walked from Thailand, the only resident family of hornbills or plantations that speak of times long past? Journey on a bicycle, with trained volunteer guides to discover the nature and heritage of Ubin. The ride is suitable especially for those who are clueless about Ubin. Don't worry if you're a novice cyclist. As long as you can balance yourself on a bike, you can certainly join us! There are only 30 places available this time, so do hurry!
