Nature activities and events happening this week 3-9 May 2004 5 May (Wed): Plants in traditional songs and folklore Time: 7pm Place: Nature Society (Singapore) office, The Sunflower #02-05 510 Geylang Road Open only to NSS members and associates Angie Ng, Tan Geok Choo and Evelyn Tan introduce local folksongs, poems that refer to plants, insects or birds found in the region. How do local folksongs reflect the life, culture and thoughts of 'kampong people' of their time? Want to learn a pantun or two? Come for this casual and fun sharing session. And if you have a tale or two to add, or a song that we can learn, we'd love to hear it. Bring along your guitar or ukulele! Contact: More details about the Nature Society (Singapore). To join the NSS, email contact@nss.org.sg or call 6741 2036. 8 May (Sat): Free guided walk at Botanic Gardens Rainforest Trail Time: 9am, 10am, 11am, 4pm You'll see giant rainforest trees and learn about them and the other plants and animals that they shelter on this one-hour tour. Register 15 minutes before the tour at the Visitor Centre. More details about the trail and about the walk on the SBG website. There is now a special Mandarin version of this tour at 4pm. Contact: info@gvn.com.sg or 6337 6062. 8 May (Sat): Free guided walk of Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve Time: 9am, 10am, 3pm, 4pm You'll see the fabulous plants and animals of the mangroves and freshwater wetlands. Meet at the Visitor Centre. Usual entry charges apply: $1 per adult, 50cents per child /student/senior citizen. More details Contact: sbwr@pacific.net.sg or call 6794 1401 9 May (Sun): Kids’ Fun with Nature at the Holistic Spring Festival at Fort Canning Centre Time: 10am. Meet at the Cox Terrace entrance to Fort Canning Centre. By the Nature Society (Singapore) Education Group. Who calls a tree a home? If you’re between the ages of 5 and 11, and are curious about our tree dwellers, join us as we explore a couple of these tree homes at Fort Canning Park. Bring along a pencil and your nature journal. Limited to the first 15 kids who register. Visit the Holistic Spring Festival at Fort Canning Centre afterwards. Meet at entrance of the trail, about 300m from the fishing ground, MacRitchie Reservoir Park. You'll see breath-taking views of the reservoir and surrounding forests and learn more about the freshwater and land wildlife and plants there. More details.
