Nature activities and events happening this week

9-15 Feb 2004

11 Feb (Wed): Heritage in our backyard the stories of Kent Ridge
Time: 12.00pm
Venue: Dept of Biological Sciences (DBS) Conference Room Block S3, Level 5, National University of Singapore, Science Drive 4. See map.

The Kent Ridge Heritage Walks and webpage was developed to raise awareness of the area's ecosystem and heritage. N. Sivasothi is giving this talk in commemoration of the Battle of Pasir Panjang, 12-15 February, 1942. Siva's first experience of Kent Ridge stemmed from botany classes there as it is a convenient outdoor classroom in the backyard. An elusive hornbill has been reported for over a decade and raptors take a lift before their journey to Sumatra. Bats stream out to hunt at night and many a snake has been encountered. The surrounding Pasir Panjang was host to a seashore and villages in the 1960's that you can barely find at Pulau Ubin today. The occasional popping sound is testament to the rubber plantations that once covered the university grounds in the 1900's. Later this became part of a British military complex and finally, NUS. The landscape witnessed the famous Battle of Pasir Panjang, possibly the bloodiest battle in the Fall of Singapore. A heroic defense to the last man by the Malay Regiment held up invading forces for two days in their relentless march to the city. And last of all, discover how and when Kent Ridge got its name!

15 Feb (Sun): Spotting primary forest fragments
along the MacRitchie Nature Trail

Time: 9am, meet at the main entrance carpark of MacRitchie Reservoir Park.
Open only to NSS members and associates

Shawn Lum and the Plant Group will conduct the walk. In contrast to the Botanic Gardens Jungle, the relict patches of primary forest in the Central Catchment Nature Reserve are connected to each other by intervening stretches of secondary forest. How can one distinguish between the primary forest remnants and the secondary forests? More importantly, will we be able to note any differences as compared to the Botanic Gardens Jungle in terms of plant and animal diversity and abundance? We will spend roughly three hours walking along the MacRitchie Nature Trail, so this trip may not be suitable for very young children (though midway, there is an exit point out onto Thomson Road). Please wear comfortable walking shoes and bring lots of water, as the complete walk (for those who go the distance) will be a 5km round trip.
