Nature activities and events happening this week 8-14 Dec 2003 9 Dec (Tue): Free videotalk on the Nudibranchs in Singapore Waters Time: 7-8.30pm Place: Geylang East Community Library, Merpati Hall auditorium. Geylang East Avenue 1, and is only 5 minutes walk away from the Aljunied MRT station Jim Wong of the Marine Conservation Group introduces these “reckless colours splashed like intricate artwork on the canvas of the sea floor.” – one would never have imagined that there would exist such intricate beauty in nature if one had not gone deeper into the realm of the underwater world. ‘Slugs’ and ‘snails’ – such names may hardly cause any excitement to a land-bound nature enthusiast, but those who have seen their underwater relatives know better! Learn how the tides play a part in this activity. The demonstration is free but usual entry charges to the Reserve apply: $1 per adult, 50cents per child /student/senior citizen. Contact: info@gvn.com.sg or 6337 6062. 13-14 Dec: Organic Farm Overnight Stay Venue: Greencircle Organic Farm (Choa Chu Kang) Time: 9am, meet at Choa Chu Kang MRT station control Organised by the Student Christian Movement Singapore, this is a unique opportunnity to re-connect with an agricultural environment and rethink how our individual choices are impacting the environment, and likewise, how the environment is influencing our lives. The stay includes fun-filled workshops about organic farming and the environment, a taste of farm work and an introduction to an organic diet by learning how to prepare delicious meals with produce straight off the farm. You can contribute items for sale, as well as drop by on Sale Day to pick up items you might need. On Sale Days, you can shop for Christmas gifts, purchase Greeting cards, t-shirts, cookies, cakes, or try Evelyn Tan's special spaghetti. Donations that can be made include books and magazines in used but reasonable condition; new or unused household items/stationery/gifts and decorative items; original VCDs, DVDs, music CDs; used binoculars and tripods. Meet at the Visitor Centre. Usual entry charges apply: $1 per adult, 50cents per child /student/senior citizen. More details Contact: sbwr@pacific.net.sg or call 6794 1401 14 Dec (Sun): Birdwatching at Mount Faber Time: 7.30am, meet at the end of Pender Road, before Mount Faber Loop Open only to NSS members and associates Tan Soon Im introduces Mount Faber which at this time of the year can host a good variety of migratory birds. Besides the many resident species, we will look out for flycatchers, cuckoos and warblers. There is also a chance to view such visiting raptors like the Oriental Honey and Grey-faced Buzzards and Black Bazas. If luck is with us, this trip can be very fruitful. Meet at entrance of the trail, about 300m from the fishing ground, MacRitchie Reservoir Park. You'll see breath-taking views of the reservoir and surrounding forests and learn more about the freshwater and land wildlife and plants there. To join the guided tour, you will need to pre-book.
