ON THIS WEEK?! Nature activities and events happening this week 10-16 Nov 2003 The month of November: “Monkey and Man” exhibition Time: Upper Peirce Reservoir Park. Learn about nature, the relations between human beings and animals in natural environment. The exhibition will be on for the whole of Nov and on weekends, NParks rangers and volunteers will be at hand to explain the exhibits and help you learn more about the monkeys. Contact: Genevie Chua 65545127 12-14 Nov: Schools Carnival celebrating Clean and Green Week 2003 Time: 11am-7pm Place: Fort Canning Gallery and Foyer Highlights include funfair booths put up by winners of the "Together, Singapore's OK" Funfair Game Competition; skit performances and stage games (at 12pm, 2pm and 4pm each day) of wining scripts of the "Together, Singapore's OK" scriptwriting competition; and learn about public health and recycling with environmental corners put up by winning primary schools of the 3Rs award. Contact: NEA Contact_NEA@nea.gov.sg or 1800-2255 632 14-16 Nov (Fri-Sun): Free Greenovations and Changi Heritage walk Place: Changi Village between Blks 2 and 3 14 Nov (Fri): 2-8pm 15-16 Nov (Sat-Sun): 10am-8pm A 3-day Green Fair organised by the Green Volunteer Network including the launch of the GVN's Heritage Trail Changi Point tour which introduces the magnificent trees of Changi and the new coastal boardwalk. Habitatnews has a fabulous site on Changi as a Heritage site. At the Fair, learn how to weave grasshoppers from a coconut front, origami, make your own terrariums, pick up and drop off secondhand books, learn kampong games and how to make toys made from recycled products. Contact: info@gvn.com.sg or 6337 6062. 15 Nov (Sat): Free Forum on Nature Photography Place: Suntec Convention Hall, Theatre, Level 2 Time: 11am and 2pm John Arifin presents the forum at the Olympus E-1 Forum Series I "The Infinite Images of Nature". Admission is free but seats are limited. To RSVP your place visit the Nature@Work website. 15 Nov (Sat): Kids Fun with Nature at the Raffles Museum of Biodiversity Research Time: morning Place: Raffles Museum of Biodiversity Research, National University of Singapore Have you ever been to a museum of natural history? Wonder what you will see in one? Who are our native animals and where do they live? Are there animals which are now extinct in Singapore? Who are our threatened animals? If you’re between the ages of 5 and 11, and are curious about all these things, then join the Nature Society (Singapore)'s Education Group for a morning tour of this museum. Places are limited as the museum. Please pre-register with us first by sending an or fax in an All-Purpose Form to 6741 0871. Contact: Vilma at vdroza@nie.edu.sg and Luan Keng at wanglk@u.washington.edu 15 Nov (Sat): Free visit to Khatib Bongsu Time: 7.30am at the Dam of the Lower Seletar Reservoir at the end of Yishun Avenue 1 Visit Khatib Bongsu with Ho Hua Chew of the Nature Society (Singapore) who will be looking at how much the projected development will affect this nature area as it has not been included into the URA Master Plan. You will also enjoy the open spaces and the scenic beauty, and do a spot of birdwatching too. More details at the NSS Conservation Committee website. Contact: contact@nss.org.sg or call 6 741 2036. 15 Nov (Sat): Discover the Kranji Nature Trail Time: Meet at 3.30 pm at the carpark by Kranji Reservoir Dam (opposite the dam’s towers) along Kranji Way. Open only to NSS members and associates Shawn Lum and the Plant Group will show that Singapore’s latest trail through mangroves is more than just a pretty place; it is an important part of an expanse of mangroves stretching from Kranji to Lim Chu Kang and beyond. Take a leisurely stroll through this lovely trail to reacquaint ourselves with the mangrove flora as well as to get a better picture of how this new site fits into the broader context of coastal habitat ecology and protection. As the trail ends at Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve, you may wish to end the walk with a late afternoon visit to look for migratory shorebirds. More details about the Nature Society (Singapore).
