Nature activities and events happening this week 29 SEP-5 OCT 2003 30 Sep (Tue): Nature on Film ("Food for Thought") Time: 1-2pm Place: Raffles Museum of Biodiversity Research, NUS Science Faculty, Block S6, Level 3. Public Gallery AVA Room Free screening of note-worthy nature documentaries, local and international. During the months of Jul to Sep, the screenings will feature the BBC and David Attenborough's survey of mammals. This is the last of 10 episodes. The series includes spectacular, often never before seen footage of 4000 mammal species from tiny two-inch pygmy shrew to the enormous blue whale; from the sloth to the swift cheetah; from the ugly naked mole rat to the adorable human baby. Each episode about 50 minutes long. AVA Room capacity: about 30. No food and drinks allowed at the venue. For more details. Contact: kelvinlim@nus.edu.sg or call 6874 5082 4 Oct (Sat): Free talk on "Birds of Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve" Time: 3-4pm Place: Woodlands Regional Library, Amazon Room In this slidetalk, Mr James Gan of the Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve shares with you interesting facts of some of the diverse bird life at the wetland. Find out why some gain weight and become fat during certain seasons and how we know that some can live for more than 10 years. Contact: Sharon_FOO@nlb.gov.sg 4 Oct (Sat): Free Nature Appreciation Walk at the Lower Peirce Boardwalk Time: 9.30am and 10.30am. Meet at Casuarina Entrance of the trail along Old Upper Thomson Road. You'll learn and see more about the plants and animals of the secondary forest and wetlands of the Lower Peirce Reservoir. More details. To join the guided tour, you will need to pre-book. Contact: NParks Rangers at 64685 736. 4 Oct (Sat): Free guided walk of Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve Time: 9am, 10am, 3pm, 4pm You'll see the fabulous plants and animals of the mangroves and freshwater wetlands. Meet at the Visitor Centre. Usual entry charges apply: $1 per adult, 50cents per child /student/senior citizen. More details Contact: sbwr@pacific.net.sg or call 6794 1401 5 Oct (Sun): Birdwatching at Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve Time: 7.30am. Meet at at the ticket counter of the Visitor Centre Open only to NSS members and associates Keith Hillier, a long-time volunteer guide at the reserve, will introduce the migrating waders from the north which should be back again at Buloh in good numbers: Common Redshanks and Greenshanks; Marsh, Curlew and Common Sandpipers; Pacific Golden and Mongolian Plovers; the godwits and egrets. Look out also for the pretty Common and striking Black-capped Kingfishers which are also visitors to our shores at this time. And don’t miss the magnificent resident Stork-billed Kingfisher.
