Nature activities and events happening this week 28 JUL-3 AUG 2003 29 Jul (Tue): Nature on Film ("A Winning Design") Time: 1-2pm Place: Raffles Museum of Biodiversity Research, NUS Science Faculty, Block S6, Level 3. Public Gallery AVA Room Free screening of note-worthy nature documentaries, local and international. During the months of Jul to Sep, the screenings will feature the BBC and David Attenborough's survey of mammals. This is the first of 10 episodes. The series includes spectacular, often never before seen footage of 4000 mammal species from tiny two-inch pygmy shrew to the enormous blue whale; from the sloth to the swift cheetah; from the ugly naked mole rat to the adorable human baby. Each episode about 50 minutes long. AVA Room capacity: about 30. No food and drinks allowed at the venue. Contact: kelvinlim@nus.edu.sg 2 Aug (Sat): Free talk on "Heritage of the Seas" Time: 2.30-4pm Place: Woodlands Regional Library, Pacific Room, Level 2 Mr Tan Sen Min, Chief, Marine Fisheries Research Department (MFRD) presents on ancient mariners' tales to sea-worthy vessels, tradewinds to rare fish of Siam. A modern day ichthyologist (ichthyology: the study of fishes), Mr Tan Sen Min shares his rich experience in the field, particularly on marine life in Southeast Asian waters. An accompanying exhibition of rare books, donated by the MFRD, offers a glimpse of the rich, unique heritage of our seas, circa 1838 (Exhibition at Level 3, besides the Singapore collection) Contact: Sharon_FOO@nlb.gov.sg or call 6 332 1816 1-3 Aug (Fri-Sun): Nature Day by the Nature Society (Singapore) Place: Bugis Junction. The Nature Society (Singapore)'s annual event with many exciting stalls, exhibitions and activities for the public. This year’s theme is, “It’s for all ages!” alluding to both Nature’s appeal to people of all ages as well as the importance of nature today and always. Highlights include nature photo exhibits focused on conservation of our threatened habitats, fun nature activities for kids, and the sale of nature-related goodies at booths by NSS special interest groups and partners. Nature Day will also see the official launch of Nature Society’s “Get Close to Nature” MRT posters, sponsored by SMRT and the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation. Don’t miss out! You'll learn and see more about the plants and animals of the secondary forest and wetlands of the Lower Peirce Reservoir. More details. To join the guided tour, you will need to pre-book. Open only to NSS members and associates. Birdwatching at the Botanical Gardens with Morten Strange of the Nature Society (Singapore). Veteran and top-notch photographer Morten leads us on this lovely afternoon on a birding trip around this spacious and verdant garden, resplendent with its multitude of colourful flowers and birds. Sure-see Long-tailed Parakeets, the whistling Common Iora, the noisy Asian Koel, the graceful Grey-rumped Treeswifts and the many sunbirds and flowerpeckers. More details Contact: sbwr@pacific.net.sg Tel: 6 794 1401 Fax: 6 793 7271 2 Aug (Sat): Free talk on "Conservation Work in Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve" Time: 3-4pm Place: Bukit Merah Community Library Mr Ramakrishnan Kolandavelu (Assistant Parks Officer) will talk on the mangrove areas in Singapore which are fast diminishing from the original 13% of Singapore landmass to about 0.5% today. This talk will feature conservation activities at Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve such as the bird ringing session and prawn harvesting sessions.
