Nature activities and events happening this week 7-13 JULY 2003 9 Jul (Wed): Terrarium-making class Time: 7.30pm Place: 52A Duxton Road Singapore 089516 Class size limited to 12 due to space constraints A terrarium is an eco-system in a glass bottle. The Green Volunteer Network is organising this class. Materials will be provided but you will need to bring along an empty clear glass bottle for the class. The opening of the bottle should be big enough for you to put the pebbles and soil into the bottle. A good bottle will be your regular Nescafe glass bottle. Try and recycle used glass bottles! Contact: info@gvn.com.sg or 6 337 6062. 11-12 Jul (Fri-Sat): "Biodiversity of Singapore-What's Up?" Place: Lecture Theatre 25, Faculty of Science, NUS Time: 8am-4pm Registration fee: $20; S$10 (Student/SIBiol member/RMBR Toddycats); $30 (Late registration, after 1st July). The biodiversity scene in Singapore is alive and well with numerous groups and individuals contributing. Some of us may be unaware of the remarkable efforts that are constantly carried out in Singapore. The symposium will feature the work of major groups and individuals, including plenary sessions by distinguished speakers and short presentations by individuals. Meet at the Visitor Centre. Usual entry charges apply: $1 per adult, 50cents per child /student/senior citizen. Meet at the junction of Sime Road and Kheam Hock Road Open only to NSS members and associates Birdwatching at Bukit Brown Cemetery with Sutari Supari and Cyril Ng of the Nature Society (Singapore). Sutari’s favourite cemetery and you can be sure of a lively morning of birdwatching amidst the woods surrounding the vast grounds of this aged cemetery. Grand old trees giving shade to grand and immaculate tombstones, with a sunbird flitting here and a woodpecker pecking there, come enjoy the serene ambience as we accompany Sutari and Cyril on this trip. Bring your mosquito repellant and have protection over your head as it will get hot towards the later part of the morning. More details about Bukit Brown. Meet at the first car park at Telok Blangah Green Road at Open only to NSS members and associates Take a leisurely stroll around the park with Gan Chong Weei of the Nature Society (Singapore). Jewels seen here include Common Birdwing, Knight, Common Imperial and Iraota rochana. As the hill is located close to both urban and forested areas, there is a mix of species from each habitat. The walk will last about two and a half hours. More details about the Nature Society (Singapore).
