SINGAPORE: Tourism experts are building a strong case for the development
of an integrated resort with entertainment and gaming facilities in
Singapore.
Members of the International Advisory Council for Tourism (IACT) unanimously
supported the idea.
However, the IACT added that the resort must be visually stunning,
unique and boast world-class facilities in order to be successful.
Plans proposed in July are for a S$700m theme park with a casino on
Sentosa.
The proposal has attracted interest from Las Vegas' biggest casino
operators, including MGM Mirage and Harrah's Entertainment. Macau's
casino king Stanley Ho is also reportedly interested. But religious
groups in Singapore have opposed the move, saying a casino will lead
to social problems.
The IACT, which advises the Singapore Tourism Board, met earlier this
month. During the two-day meeting, the Council discussed key trends
in the tourism landscape, competitive strategies and opportunities
in China, India and the region. Chairman of IACT, Lim Chin Beng, said
Singapore needs to take bold steps in its tourism development to stay
ahead of the competition.
Other suggestions include tapping on the emergence of low-cost carriers,
promoting Singapore's diversity and developing the healthcare and
education services. - CNA
