Sentosa to send visitors on a high with 650m
luge track
By Andrea Tan
SENTOSA is planning a $5.5 million luge track with an aerial chair
lift to raise the island's fun quotient. The luge is reportedly Asia's
first outside Japan.
Sentosa is in the midst of a dramatic makeover and plans to turn itself
into a hip island resort.
Sentosa said it has reached an agreement with New Zealand's Skyline
Enterprises Ltd to develop the luge. The proposed 650-metre luge track
will link the cluster of attractions near the Carlsberg Sky Tower
to Siloso Beach's entertainment hub. 'Bringing the luge to Sentosa
fits our ongoing efforts to rejuvenate the island with a host of entertaining
and fun facilities for our guests,' said Darrell Metzger, chief executive
officer of Sentosa.
In 2002, Sentosa embarked on a major 10-year development plan to transform
the island into a world-class resort destination. Sentosa has plans
for a new theme park costing $300-$700 million.
Earlier reports said Sentosa has been in discussions with Australia's
Village Roadshow, which has WarnerBros Movie World and the Sea World
Nara Resort among others in its stable.
Elaborating on the luge, Sentosa said riders can either race down
or leisurely cruise along a specially designed paved trail. 'The luge
cart combines a unique steering and braking system that provides the
rider with total control,' Sentosa said. 'A two-way chair lift, similar
to a ski lift, transports riders through a scenic 320-metre-long tree-top
ride back to the starting point where they can do it all over again.'
The luge is expected to be completed by the middle of next year. |
