I've come to see my friends Zeehan, Tse-Lynn and Jani who are at Bollywood Veggies to help build a dry toilet. Bollywood Veggies is an organic farm and an oasis in the middle of the Sungei Tengah and Sungei Bulor river valleys. It is at 100 Neo Tiew Road about 3 mins drive from Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve and half hour's drive from the city.
gobygirl Posted on 22/07/04 14:24 I have to agree, it's a great place to chill!

jani Posted on 22/07/04 16:14

A slice of heaven which you miss the minute you leave and feel right at home the minute you walk through the gates. Bless Ivy for making it possible.

Owner Ivy Lim-Singh is trying to get us to eat the snails that are abundant in the ecopond that surrounds her new Bistro called "Poison Ivy". She says if we find snails nice to eat, she will sell a million and give us 30cents on the dollar. We are thinking about it...
gobygirl Posted on 22/07/04 14:27
Apparently, there are two different species of these escargot Ivy was refering to - they are both apple snails though! One is with greenish shell and the other with a brown one!

Ria Posted on 23/07/04 09:48
It still doesn't make me want to eat them though...

Pink egg cases of aforementioned snails coat the stones and lily stalks of the pond.
gobygirl Posted on 22/07/04 14:29
Ever wonder why the eggs are so conspicuous? Are the snails not afraid of predators?? Well, scientists have found out that the predators do not find the eggs good to eat and some even suggest that they may be toxic!

Ria Posted on 23/07/04 09:47
Good thing Ivy didn't want to make us eat the EGGS then :-)

The nests of Baya weaver birds decorate the pergola leading to "Poison Ivy" bistro. Resident chef and visiting specialist chefs offer versatile cuisine. Ivy says "You tell us and we'll cook it". The Bistro can seat 40 comfortably or 70 for standup cocktails. For details call Ivy at 68985001.
18/07/04 17:18 Bollywood Veggies #5:
Pots of herbs such as Citronella, Laksa Leaf, Pandan are on sale in front of the bistro.
18/07/04 17:20 Bollywood Veggies #6:
As we tour the organic farm, we chanced upon these phallic hanging Snake Gourds. Jani is pointing it out but insists her face shouldn't be in the photo...
18/07/04 17:22 Bollywood Veggies #7:
We bumped into Michele and family. They have just caught a Tilapia from the pond at the farm.
18/07/04 17:23 Bollywood Veggies #8:
There is mini tractor for mini men to play with.
18/07/04 17:26 Bollywood Veggies #9:
And here is the dry toilet that my friends Zeehan, Tse-Lynn and Jani (left to right) built. What the *$#@ is a dry toilet?... I got a long explanation. Basically, it allows recycling of our waste products. That's why Bollywood Veggies are Sooo Tasty!
gobygirl Posted on 22/07/04 14:31
We helped build it - the structure as shown, is still uncompleted!
18/07/04 17:28 Bollywood Veggies #10:
The lotus pond near the dry toilet was particularly lush and beautiful :-) Bollywood Veggies are the largest lotus growers.
18/07/04 17:31 Bollywood Veggies #11:
Neat rows of yummy looking veggies. Bollywood Veggies are growers of uncommon medicinal trees and herbs such as the Horse Radish Tree, West Indian Pea Tree and various gingers. They also claim to be the growers of the hottest chilli padi on the island.

We take a last look at the farm before we leave. They are specialists in fruit vegetables such as Ladies' Fingers, Long Beans, Corn, Cucumbers, Melons. So do come and drop by the farm at 100 Neo Tiew Road, 68985001.
gobygirl Posted on 22/07/04 14:32
Saw tons of birds here from bee-eaters to coucals and even (I believe) a resident black-shouldered kite who hung around the whole time and kept making dives through the air!

jani Posted on 22/07/04 16:17 Birder!~ But it is a great place to stake out if you want to see feathered friends... saw loads but I don't know what they are. All I know is that they're not crows and mynahs...
18/07/04 18:15 Bollywood Veggies #13:
One the way back we have dinner at Kranji Corner where they have Enormous Rocket Thosai at only 50cents each!!
18/07/04 18:16 Bollywood Veggies #14:
Going...
18/07/04 18:34 Bollywood Veggies #15:
...gone in 60 seconds.
18/07/04 18:41 Bollywood Veggies #16 (last):
No problems! We have ANOTHER one!!
jani Posted on 22/07/04 16:19 It was only 50 cents lah! And helping to build a toilet at noon time is hard work! Could have eaten 10 of those if hadn't ordered sth else earlier on... man... miss the thosais already. Good and cheap... mmmmmmmmm *drool*

Ria Posted on 23/07/04 15:11 And she is not kidding...the amount of food that jani can eat is quite frightening sometimes :-)
