Wasteful expenditure and waste of electricity
Letter from Khoo Sze Wee

I AM an undergraduate of Nanyang Technological University (NTU).

Recently, a big TV screen was installed at one of the entrances to the campus. I feel that it is a waste of money as there is no way that motorists using the entrance would be able to stop by the junction and see what is being screened. If the university wants to project a high-tech or vibrant image, there are many other ways of doing so.

The university should play a leading role in educating students about energy conservation. It can do so by setting a good example through conserving electricity and adopting greener ideas.

However, that is not the case in NTU. In the computer lab in the business school, there are at least 200 computer terminals. As it is now vacation time, there are few students around. But each time I enter the lab I find that all the computers are switched on. It is a sheer waste of energy. Apparently, the terminals are left on 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Imagine the amount of electricity that is being wasted as there are thousands of computer terminals in the university.

One more thing that I noticed which adds to the wastage of electricity is the air- conditioning. Many a time, students had to wear sweaters to beat the cold. I was told by a professor that it is the same in his office. I am baffled as to why no action has been taken to turn up the thermostat.

Every individual can help to alleviate the problem of global warming, what more a big organisation such as a university. I am sure NTU can do much to cut wasteful electricity consumption, and also wasteful expenditure.

NTU committed to saving energy
Letter from Chia Oi Leng (Ms)
Chief Building & Infrastructure Officer Nanyang Technological University

I REFER to the letter by Mr Khoo Sze Wee, 'Wasteful expenditure and waste of electricity' (ST, July 21).

The Nanyang Technological University (NTU) is committed to energy conservation and doing its part for the environment. The 'big TV screen' mentioned in the letter is an LED display board.

It is a piece of used equipment donated to the university and is part of our green efforts to salvage used equipment. An LED display board, similar to those used along roads, is more energy efficient than a conventional TV screen.

As part of our continual effort to implement energy-conservation measures, we regularly review the automated scheduling of air-conditioning, presetting of space temperature and the upgrading of plants and equipment. We also survey occupants to solicit feedback for system improvement and adjustment.

We will continue to fine-tune the automated scheduling of air-conditioning and equipment according to usage patterns and the needs of students and staff.

We thank Mr Khoo for his comments. Indeed, every individual has a part to play to conserve resources and to alleviate global warming.

Polyclinic was too cold for comfort
Letter from Seah Kian Chong

MR KHOO Sze Wee's observations in 'Wasteful expenditure and waste of electricity' (ST, July 21), tally with what I witnessed last Saturday when I accompanied my son to Sengkang Polyclinic, which consists of two levels.

The air-con temperature on the ground floor where patients wait to register was quite comfortable.

However, the second level where patients wait to see the doctor was freezing, with the thermostats set at a range of 16 to 23 deg C, far in excess of the comfortable 25 deg recommended.

Why didn't anyone spare a thought for the patients, from newborns to the very elderly, who may not be able to withstand the cold?

Besides, what has happened to all the talk about saving the environment by adopting greener habits in everyday living?
