Alpha Synovate, ITE College East team up to recycle cooking oil into biofuel

SINGAPORE : Recycled vegetable oil that works on diesel engines - this may soon become a reality. Waste cooking oil can be processed and turned into biodiesel that runs smoothly in diesel engines.

Together with Alpha Synovate, a design & develop engineering company, students from ITE College East have been recycling and testing biodiesel on a variety of diesel-vehicles.

"We can cut down on a lot of black smoke, about 70% less of black smoke. Power wise, I don't feel any difference. And the engine is quieter than before," comments Jeffrey Ang, a network analyst.

Although biodiesel is nearly twice the price of regular diesel (at about $2 per litre), the testers are hoping to prove its benefits.

Comparing a vehicle running on regular diesel and one that uses biodiesel, the differences are - cleaner emissions, smoother engine performance and a better-smelling exhaust.

"Biodiesel processing is basically the conversion of oil, and in this case it's waste food oil into biodiesel through a chemical process," says Allan Lim Yee Chian, CEO of Alpha Synovate.

"For a vehicle owner, biofuel is cleaner, which means you have very little emission and your engine is a lot more stable. Your emission will not have all that black smoke coming out, it's all clean emission."

For the two partners, the next step is to improve the product further by computerising and speeding up the processes. - CNA /ls
