Times Forum 18 Apr 07 Recycle plastic - that's what we should all do Angela Banerjee (Mrs) PLASTIC - it is everywhere. Containers used for floor cleaners to face cleansers, cough syrup to cosmetics. Containers for take-away meals. Plastic sheets to wrap food and furniture in transit. Plastic bags for coffee and chilli sauce, fresh fish and vegetables. Buy yoghurt or margarine, and what is the container made of? Our precious electronics are cradled in it and our precious children have all sorts of plastic toys. Why then this constant harping on supermarket plastic bags? Maybe we have to start somewhere but, in Singapore at least, it is the one plastic item which gets reused - for throwing household waste. What is the alternative to this use? There are two that I can think of. Buying special bags at about four cents each, or throwing waste without bagging. Why not find a way to recycle all plastic? There is a company in Europe which has done that. It even exports its product, which is roof tiles. Please leave the supermarket bag alone and attack the biggest plastic problem - how to recycle all. links Related articles in Singapore: reduce, reuse, recycle and Plastic bags |
