Times Forum 18 Apr 07 Some suggestions on how we can fight global warming Letter from Masood Mohajer I AM in full agreement with the comments of Mr Malcolm Lower in his letter, 'Cheap diesel fuel leads to waste and pollution' (ST, April 9). It is clearly evident to all, including us fortunate enough to call Singapore home, that global warming is a clear and present danger and that immediate steps must be taken to ensure our children are spared the ravages of the natural chaos that will surely ensue if we continue on this path of unsustainable consumption. Here are some suggestions: 1) With immediate effect, ensure that all modes of public transport are switched from diesel/fuel to LNG. If Hong Kong can do it, I am sure we can too. 2) Provide immediate tax relief and rebates to those who buy hybrid cars and implement an environmental tax on those driving SUVs. Canada recently implemented such a plan in which those purchasing hybrid cars would receive a rebate of up to C$2,000 from the federal government on their purchases and those driving fuel-inefficient cars would be taxed C$4,000. 3) Encourage all households to install solar panels to reduce their consumption and reliance on the electrical grid. 4) Implement a nationwide ban on the importation and use of all forms of light bulbs that are not energy-saving. 5) Encourage all offices and commerical businesses and government-related entities to 'turn off' their lights at night. I am sure that as residents and citizens of Singapore, we can all agree that we cherish our city and nation and that we could agree that these steps could be implemented without any implication to the business or national security interests of Singapore. After all, we do want our children to enjoy Singapore in the same way we have grown accustomed to enjoying it. links Related articles on Singapore: green energy |
