Times Forum 2 Mar 07 How schools can play a part in recycling Letter from Kenneth Cheng Jing Wen Despite the many on-going recycling campaigns nationwide, recycling has still not caught on. Many have yet to realise how concerted efforts from the masses can make a great difference, and save the environment. Certainly, there are many avenues in which recycling can take place. Take, for instance, in schools. Here are numerous ways schools can play a part in recycling: Recycling bags Have one in every classroom so students can recycle unwanted paper, books, etc. Mass recycling campaigns Hold mass recycling campaigns at least once every term, where the entire school - staff and students alike - join forces to recycle used plastic bottles, old newspapers, etc. Use only recycled paper School bookshops should put up for sale only writing pads and exercise books made from recycled paper. Teachers, too, should print study materials and worksheets on recycled paper. Set up a recycling club Every school should start a recycling club comprising student-volunteers to help coordinate recycling efforts within the school. With every school in Singapore playing a part in recycling, I am confident that this would prevent the world's natural resources from depleting at such a rapid rate. Last but not least, I would like to urge the Ministry of Education to continually encourage schools to recycle fervently, and the National Environment Agency to join forces with the MOE to formalise recycling programmes in schools. links Related articles on Singapore: reduce, reuse and recycle |
