NewsAsia 6 Feb 07 Fuel cell cars may be commercially available in S'pore in 2012: DaimlerChrysler By Loh Kim Chin SINGAPORE : Fuel cell cars may well be commercially available in Singapore in 2012, if DaimlerChrysler's research and tests go according to plan. The car maker is currently working to substantially reduce costs in its third generation of fuel cell vehicles. Christian Mohrdieck, Director, DaimlerChrysler, said, "If the cost level can be driven down to the cost level we have today for internal combustion cars, and if hydrogen cars are available like gasoline and diesel fuels are available today, the customers will be happy to drive fuel cell cars, because the driving behaviour already today in some espects is much better because electricity is very comfortable and gives you very good acceleration." DaimlerChrysler has launched the second phase of its F-Cell Global Programme Partnership. This will test four cars using hydrogen fuel cells and see how they respond in Singapore's tropical environment. The programme also involves the National Environment Agency, oil giant BP Singapore and German airline Lufthansa. The US, Germany and Japan are also conducting similar tests. - CNA/ms links Related articles on Singapore: green energy |
