24kg of python skin seized at Tuas checkpoint, two men arrested

SINGAPORE: More than 24 kilogrammes of skin belonging to a reticulated python were seized at Tuas Checkpoint on Friday.

Immigration officials found the snake skin when they checked on a cargo truck. 75 pieces of dried python skin were hidden in a pillow case and under a mattress behind the driver's seat.

Two Malaysian men (aged 28 and 29) admitted carrying the skins and were arrested.

The reticulated python is protected in Singapore under an international agreement on trade in endangered species.

If convicted, the men face a fine of up to $500,000 and/or a jail term of up to two years. - CNA/ir
