Captain Planet may yet be back
Reply from Leslie Lee Programming Director MediaCorp TV12 Kids Central

I REFER to the letter, 'Bring back Capt Planet and ENV frog cartoon' (ST, Nov 27), by Mr Han Yunhao.

We thank Mr Han for his feedback and are pleased that he had enjoyed Captain Planet.

As MediaCorp TV12 Kids Central aims to provide quality shows as well as inculcate positive values in a fun and kid-friendly way, we have acquired and produced shows that promoted awareness of our environment and conservation.

Earlier this year, we aired Expedition!, a 10-part info-educational series produced locally. Expedition! traced the adventures of five Singapore children, aged eight to 14 years, who journeyed from the northern tip of Malaysia to Singapore.

In each episode, the kids explored an environmental issue with a guide from the area. By the end of the series, they learnt a variety of important lessons, ranging from saving endangered Asian elephants to the basics of organic farming.

The eco-adventure experience was well received by our viewers and we are pleased to announce a second season of Expedition! in January. The new season, Expedition! Thailand, will take kids on a journey through Thailand to discover the intricacies of wildlife, help out in an irrigation project and visit a rare bird sanctuary. From rare glimpses of endangered animals to little-known fishes and amazing nature footage, Expedition! Thailand will give kids a greater awareness of the world outside their backyard.

The 13-episode series is scheduled to premiere on Kids Central on Jan 6 at 9am.

Our daily IQ Max block on weekdays also features kid-friendly documentaries and shows focusing on the environment. These include critically-acclaimed acquired programmes like Jeff Corwin Unleashed (wildlife documentary series) and Backyard Science (science experiments, including conservation and environmental ones done in a fun and interactive way).

We are looking into repeating Captain Planet.

Meanwhile, we hope Mr Han will tune in to the shows mentioned above.
