Singapore's light-up plan will consume more power and add to greenhouse effect

Letter from Ms Amy Wong Pong Beng

I refer to the report on the government's proposed lighting plans.

I'm no expert on environmental issues but hasn't Singapore just ratified the Kyoto Agreement?

Wouldn't the increased lighting lead to increased consumption of electricity and gas and wouldn't this add to the greenhouse effect, not to mention an increase in public spending on the extra resource consumption?

Is all this extra lighting necessary?

Can't the money to be spent on power consumption, light fittings etc be put to better use, like providing aid to the poor instead of raising the Goods and Services Tax?
