NewsAsia 22 Oct 06 Singapore Environment Council raises $10,000 from charity film screening By Valarie Tan A film starring former American Vice-President Al Gore has raised $10,000 for the Singapore Environment Council. The film aims to spread the message of climate change to viewers. "An Inconvenient Truth" documents Al Gore's travelling talk-show to educate the masses about global warming. The film, made after the former politician's defeat in the 2000 presidential election, won rave reviews at this year's Sundance Film Festival. And a charity premiere in Singapore garnered a warm response. More than half of 600 tickets were sold to help the Singapore Environment Council raise funds for its Climate Change Awareness Programme. The outreach project was started early this year to help Singaporeans understand what is global warming and what they can do to help. Howard Shaw, Executive Director of the Singapore Environment Council, said: "We can do a lot in terms of putting policies in place, rectifying the Kyoto Protocol, but you're only going to be able to do so much, unless you actually change the behaviour of the people." Dr Amy Khor, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Environment and Water Resources, said: "There's some way to go to get the message to the public, to the masses especially, of the need to be aware of the fact that climate change is occurring and that all of us can actually help." The film will be screened along with the Clean and Green Week next month, since this year's campaign centres on climate awareness. "An Inconvenient Truth" premieres in Singapore cinemas on Oct 26. - CNA/ir links Related articles on Global issues: Climate change |
