21 Aug 06 Offer incentives for 'green' cars to cut down air pollution Letter from Toh Wen Shien I recently visited the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources (MEWR) website and downloaded the Key Environmental Statistics 2006 report. I was shocked to find that there are only 78 hybrid vehicles on our roads. Hybrid vehicles are environmentally-friendly but cost more. Perhaps the extra cost is why Singaporeans are reluctant to buy them. I urge the National Environment Agency and MEWR to offer cash incentives or lower the COE prices of these vehicles to encourage more Singaporeans to purchase these vehicles, which would do our environment a lot of good. Air pollution is a serious problem and we need to take action by cutting down vehicle emission. The air would not be polluted if we cut down vehicle emission by using hybrid ones. links Related articles on Singapore: green energy |
