Times Forum 12 Aug 06 Singapore should develop renewable sources of energy such as solar power Letter from Daryl Er Tze Hao THE theory of global warming surfaced after scientists recorded a rise in global average temperature since 1895. The Ministry of the Environment and Water Resoures (MEWR) and the National Environment Agency (NEA) have taken many measures to combat global warming. However, I cannot help but think that not enough has been done to solve this global crisis. One way to stop global warming is to burn less fossil fuels to prevent carbon dioxide entering the atmosphere and trap heat. To my surprise, Singapore's dependence on natural gas has actually grown by 14 per cent from 2003 to last year. This disturbing fact is accompanied by another: Singapore's greenhouse gas emissions have gone up since 2003. I urge MEWR and NEA to develop renewable sources of energy such as solar power. We need to harness solar power as Singapore is warm and sunny all year round. Stopping global warming is extremely important and we need to take action immediately if we are to avoid facing deadly consequences. links Related articles on Singapore: green energy |
