Times Forum 7 Aug 06 Get fast food restaurants and shopping malls to join recycling exercise Letter from Tan Lay Cher (Ms) It is heartening to know that more Singaporeans are becoming environmentally conscious in the article "More condos getting into recycling act" (ST, July 31). There is no doubt the National Environment Agency has been extremely successful in its residential recycling programme. Its programme should also include the fast food restaurants and shopping malls, as these are places where tonnes of recyclable waste still end up at incineration plants. Recycling should be a shared responsibility between homes and businesses. It should not just terminate outside homes, below HDB blocks or outside MRT stations. Recycling bins should be provided in shopping malls and fast food restaurants. Since most Singaporeans are already recycling at home, providing bins at fast food restaurants and shopping malls will enable them to extend their recycling habits. I believe the NEA can replicate its successful residential recycling programme and hope it will encourage participation from the commercial sector. links Related articles on Singapore: reduce, reuse, recycle |
