Online 9 Jun 06 Marketing conservation: Wet markets make ideal places for recycling bins Letter from Kathy Lee I refer to your article, "No plastic while shopping, please" (June 5). My mother is a 70-year-old housewife and after watching a documentary produced by TVB, she became very diligent about recycling and disposal of plastics. She wants to participate in the resource conservation program. She stays in Tiong Bahru and to her surprise, there is only one place ? the third floor of Tiong Bahru Plaza--with a recycling bin for used cans only. So, she collects all the used cans at home and makes the 10-minute walk to the mall to drop off the cans. If the authorities want the public to participate in the resource conservation programs, the best locations to create awareness is at the markets. There are still many people who visit wet markets and it is very convenient for housewives and maids to dispose of the used cans, paper and plastics in the respective recycling bins before buying their groceries in the morning. Also, educate the children and they will pass on the message to their elderly at home. The Tiong Bahru Wet Market has just been renovated and is open for business. I hope the National Environment Agency would consider placing a recycling bin at the location on trial. I think word-of-mouth and the actions of some housewives will help to spread the message to more people. links Related articles on Singapore: reduce, reuse, recycle |
