New environment award announced for champions of the environment

SINGAPORE: Champions of the environment are eligible for a new award. Called the President's Award for the Environment, it will replace the Singapore Green Plan 2012 Award.

Environment and Water Resources Minister Dr Yaacob Ibrahim made the announcement at the prize presentation ceremony of the National Weather Study Project.

The new award will recognise and honour individuals, organisations and companies who have made significant contributions to Singapore's efforts in achieving environmental sustainability.

The award to will be given to entries that have had an excellent environmental track record, have made high impact contributions to the environment, and have adopted and promoted good environmental practices both within and beyond themselves and their organisations.

Public nominations for the award open from 30th May to till 31st July. Winners will be announced in November, and will receive a trophy and a certificate from the President of Singapore.

Dr Yaacob also revealed the National Environment Agency is looking for feedback from the public on climate issues.

His ministry has launched a 4-month public consultation on the environment, the views from which will help develop a National Climate Change Strategy.

"Through this consultation, we will gather feedback from the public on our existing measures on climate change and energy efficiency, as well as your views on new measures proposed. This would help us draw a more comprehensive strategy to address all the issues related to climate change. I strongly urge all individuals, companies and organisations to take a look at the consultation document on my Ministry's website (www.mewr.gov.sg) and let us know your views," said Dr Yaacob.

At this event, Dr Yaacob also gave out awards to the winners of the National Weather Project Study Competition, which saw 179 schools from the primary, secondary and junior college levels taking part. Chongfu Primary won at the Primary level, with their project on finding the relationship between the weather and absentee rates in the school. The pupils from Primary Six not only conducted interviews with students, teachers and staff but also came up with a chart to reflect the outcome of their study.

"I learnt that weather does affect our school pupil's likelihood to get sickness. If the weather is too hot, they will sometimes have fever and get sickness and they will be absent from school," said Tan Yan Qian from Chongfu Primary School.

Fuhua Secondary and Tanjong Katong Girls' Secondary jointly took the top spot in the Secondary School category while for the College level, Hwa Chong Institution emerged the winner. - CNA /dt

MEWR launches public consultation on National Climate Change Strategy

SINGAPORE'S effort to tackle climate change has moved up a gear following its signing of the Kyoto Protocol in April.

The Ministry of Environment and Water Resources (MEWR) has launched a four-month public consultation on the proposed National Climate Change Strategy (NCCS). The public consultation exercise will seek comments on proposed climate change measures and ideas on how they can be improved or expanded.

Said Environment and Water Resources Minister Dr Yaacob Ibrahim yesterday: "Through this consultation, we will gather feedback from the public on our existing measures on climate change and energy efficiency, as well as your views on new measures proposed. This would help us draw a more comprehensive strategy to address all the issues related to climate change."

Members of the public, companies and organisations can access the consultation document at www.mewr.gov.sg/nccs. The exercise closes on Sept 30.
