161 trees in Singapore designated as Heritage Trees

SINGAPORE : The National Parks Board has designated 161 trees in Singapore as Heritage Trees, up from just 35 in 2002.

The trees were selected from nominations sent in by the public and endorsed by the Heritage Trees Panel, which assessed the trees based on height and girth as well as social, historical, and educational significance.

The Young Arborist Programme has also been launched. It targets school children and provides them with the means to use the outdoors as a classroom. Students will get a chance to appreciate nature and understand how trees are part of history and heritage.

Said Dr Mohamad Maliki Osman, Parliamentary Secretary for National Development, "I think the Young Arborist Programme is quite unique because it tries to make it palatable and more in tune with what they are learning in schools, bringing them out of the school context, bringing them out of the classroom, and making the environment their classroom." - CNA /ct
