The
Straits Times Forum Online 25 Apr 05 Upgrade Pasir Ris East, but please keep its rustic charm Letter from George Hitchins I applaud the plans to upgrade Pasir Ris East and certain parts of Jalan Loyang Besar. It certainly could do with some nips and tucks, but I would like to emphasise that the main reason this road is popular with residents is that it is different. It still oozes the rustic and kampong charm, something that is not easily found these days. I would hate to see it become just another road with bright lights. What it could do with are a few more speed humps to slow cars down. I would also like the National Parks Board to consider the woods at the end of Jalan Loyang Besar, which is home to an abundance of wildlife, including kingfishers, parakeets. There are also daily visits from some eagles doing their bit of sea fishing, not to mention the plant life. What are the conditions for the woodlands to be graded as a bird sanctuary? Any road works will have to consider the flora and fauna that are part of Jalan Loyang Besar. Equally important is the tranquility of this wonderful and almost forgotten part of town. To those who know, it has been a well-kept secret. links Related articles on Singapore's biodiversity |
