Sowing seeds of hope for Earth Day

Six-year-old Geoffrey Kok gives classmate Derek Ang some tips on how to remove a bean seedling from its can before transplanting it into a pot.

The pair were among 150 Catholic High primary students who capped a week's worth of pro-environment activities with a mass seedling-transplanting session yesterday, to mark Earth Day today.

The 160 bean plants, donated by City Developments and the Singapore Environment Council two weeks ago, had the words 'Go Green' lasered onto them.

The students have been charting the growth of the plants until they were moved from their cans into pots yesterday. Eventually, the plants will be moved to the school's Eco-Garden when they outgrow the pots.

In the past week, students have been learning about conservation and the three 'Rs': reduce, reuse and recycle. They have collected paper for recycling, cared for other plants, and created sculptures ranging from swans to crabs from waste material.

As six-year-old Primary 1 pupils Yeo Su Bin and Kenrick Kwa said: 'It's fun! We'd do it again.'
