System aims to reduce landfill dramatically

Four councils in Sydney's outer south-west and in the southern highlands are to be involved in a waste solution system which will reduce landfill by up to 75 per cent.

In a New South Wales first, the Campbelltown, Camden, Wollondilly and Wingecarribee councils have awarded a $150 million contract to WSN Environmental Solutions.

The contract involves a fully sustainable waste solution which addresses general waste, garden organics and kerbside recyclables. Wollondilly's Mayor Phillip Costa says it uses an innovative water system to separate items for landfill and recycling.

"The rubbish will go into a water container, a large one, heavy items go to the bottom, there is a mechanism at the bottom to bring heavy items out, what can be recycled is, what won't that's the part that goes to landfill," he said.

"The middle layer of the water is where the organic matter will float and that goes into the compost bins, and what floats on top is usually paper and plastic and that goes to recycling."
