7-Eleven goes green

THE next time you walk into a 7-Eleven store, you might find yourself walking out with a big, lime green shopping bag. Priced at $1, the bag is the store's way of persuading consumers to switch from using that ubiquitous--but environmentally unfriendly--plastic bag.

Singapore's largest chain of convenience stores has launched the environmentally-friendly project with the slogan "use less plastic bags to save our earth".

Posters at the entrance and cashier counters of more than 300 stores islandwide will display that message. In the event visual reminders are lost on busy shoppers, the counter staff will reinforce the message.

Asking the customer if they want the environmentally friendly alternative to the plastic bag will be "as important as greeting our customers and saying thank you", said Mr Benjamin Eng, chief exexutive officer of 7-Eleven Singapore.

If the ecological message doesn't inspire stores to put the idea into practice, they can expect cash incentives, said Mr Eng.

The top four stores that register the biggest drop in plastic bag usage will see the rewards, he said, without elaborating.

But it remains to be seen if the idea will take off with customers. Said a shopper at 7-Eleven: "I already recycle my plastic bags and bring some with me whenever I shop, so I guess I won't need it. But I think it's a good idea."
