Don't wait till you're rich. Make recycling a way of life now
Letter from Lew Yin Choo (Mdm)

Now that we have a plan to have allocated recycle centres, let us make sure they are places of dignity and respectability, maybe even centres of information.

Don't put them in heavy traffic areas where people may forgetfully use them as litter bins, or next to bin centres where they are mistaken for rubbish bins. People who are environmentally responsible are likely to be health conscious also and do not mind walking the distance as long as the bins are available.

It is time that even frugal HDB folk appreciate recycling as a way of life, just as primary education is compulsory for all.

Generally, children begin to understand when they reach tertiary education age the actions of those neighbours their parents describe as unusual.

When we have never heard a whistling kettle or seen a gas meter, we think our neighbours are weird.

No more should anyone empathise with an excuse such as 'Ma'am, when you stay in HDB flats, it is like this'.

We do not have to wait till we are condominium-rich before we act responsibly and graciously. In fact, wealth and responsibility are independent assets.

Lew Yin Choo (Mdm)
