16 Aug 05 Singapore to host environment expo in November By Anjana Menon SINGAPORE : The biennial evironment expo Enviro Asia will be back in November. Bigger than ever, this year's expo is already fully booked. It will play host to more than 125 local and international players in the field of environmental solutions and services. Singapore households produce about one kilogram of waste per person each day. While that has spawned a slew of successful local companies such as refuse collector Sulo, it's just the tip of the iceberg for an industry estimated to be worth US$126 billion in Asia Pacific alone. And therein lies the business opportunity. "The pie is very big. If you look at the turnover in waste management association's report, we are talking about half a billion dollar mark for the Singapore market," said Loh Wai Kiew, Chairperson of Waste Management & Recycling Association of Singapore. Plenty of deals are expected to be signed and announced at the expo. Local companies such as Hyflux and SembCorp Environmental Management will showcase their systems and services, while they explore business opportunities in emerging markets like China and India. "India is definitely opening up. We went there and for a company to penetrate eight cities at a time, it's a feat. The legislation and the market is opening up much more in tandem with what we are expecting. In China, the market is opening up but it's a more city-centric strategy. So I'd say the waste management opportunities in these two countries are enormous," said Loh. For the general public, there will be a competition at the expo - to pick a winner for an innovative project for sustaining the environment. The top three winners will be awarded a cash prize as seed capital for their projects. links Related articles on Singapore: general environmental issues |
