New reservoirs for north-east S'pore
By Radha Basu

THE sleepy backwaters of the Sungei Punggol and Sungei Serangoon rivers on Singapore's north-eastern fringes will be dammed up to form new reservoirs by 2009, the Public Utilities Board (PUB) announced in its annual report.

The new reservoirs will tap run-off water from HDB townships and expand Singapore's water catchments to encompass two-thirds of the country's total land area. Tenders for the two projects will be floated later this year.

The report, launched at a pre-dusk ceremony at MacRitchie Reservoir yesterday, also announced a scheme to link the existing reservoirs by pipelines and upgrade pumping systems.

The $18 million project, known as the Reservoir Integration Scheme, is likely to be completed next year.

The PUB also detailed its new breakthrough in water treatment technology. It has, for example, developed new equipment that can help convert some of the sludge that results from water treatment into biogas, which can be used as fuel to generate electricity.

At the ceremony, the board also introduced its new mascot, 'Water Wally', the bright blue water droplet that has been seen floating above drainage channels around the island in recent weeks. It was designed to promote water conservation.

PUB launches 'Water Wally' mascot to spread water conservation message
By Johnson Choo

SINGAPORE : Every drop counts - that is what Water Wally would say if only he could talk.

PUB's new mascot, shaped like a drop of water, is here to spread the water conservation message.

It was officially unveiled at the MacRitchie Reservoir by Environment and Water Resources Minister, Dr Yaacob Ibrahim.

As a newest "member" of the PUB family, the board hopes Water Wally will appeal to the masses by spreading its message in a lively and interactive way.

With the help of Water Wally, the PUB hopes Singaporeans can be reminded on the need to conserve and value, as we enjoy using the water resources. - CNA/ms
