Letters to the Straits Times Forum Page, 25 Jul 05 Punggol beach not so clean Letter by Gene Kam SINCE work was completed on the seafront at Punggol, I thought one could not find a cleaner beach in Singapore. On July 15 between 8.30am and 9.15am, I watched in amazement as a cleaner on the beach (who had trash bags printed 'Onyx') dug a hole next to each small pile of branches, twigs and litter, and blithely swept the lot into the hole. He then covered the hole with sand and patted it down. He did this with every small pile he collected along the beach. I could understand it if he buried branches and twigs as they are 'natural' debris, but he didn't even bother to pick out the plastic bags or styrofoam cups. I wonder what picnickers might think if they knew they were sitting on what might be an ever-accumulating layer of rubbish beneath the pristine white sand.
