Straits Times, 20 Jun 05 Water sports for Pandan Reservoir? PANDAN Reservoir may be opened to the public for water sports. Environment and Water Resources Minister Yaacob Ibrahim told reporters yesterday the Public Utilities Board (PUB) is discussing with other groups how a water-sports centre similar to the one at Bedok Reservoir can be set up at Pandan. He was responding to questions about the PUB's plans to open up more reservoirs. Dr Yaacob announced last year that eight of Singapore's 14 reservoirs will be opened to the public for water sports. Yesterday, Dr Yaacob officially opened the water-sports centre at Bedok Reservoir. The public can rent kayaks at PAddlez Inc@Bedok Reservoir. 'This is a continuation of our efforts to open up and bring life to our reservoirs, to help Singaporeans enjoy and bond better with our water resources,' Dr Yaacob said. In March, the minister opened the kayak centre at MacRitchie Reservoir. He said the centre records about 160 rentals a month, mostly during weekends. That number of rentals, he said, is quite respectable for a new centre. Besides kayaking, other water sports are on the cards at Bedok Reservoir. Dr Yaacob said: 'We know MacRitchie is quieter, so we don't allow wakeboarding. 'At Bedok Reservoir, dragon boaters can come, you can make all the noise you want because at the end of the day, the place is already noisy.' links Related articles on Re-creation in our wild places and water issues |
