NewsAsia, 21 May 05 Singapore gets 40th birthday tribute with photo art book By Valerie Low/Joanne Leow "To Singapore with Love" - Singapore's very own photo art book - is almost ready to hit the stores. The book is a tribute to Singapore's 40th birthday. It features the best 330 of the over 8,000 photos sent in. Pictures of an eagle atop a tree, a lizard, a beach, palm trees, a beetle, a monkey, a crane. Or, pictures of body builders, wushu kids, a man standing below an MRT track, kids peeking through a hole, a couple kissing, kids and their father, fishmonger, National Servicemen. More pictures, of the Esplanade, Merlion, a lion dance. These were some of the photo entries sent in by Singaporeans. Whether they are pictures of people, the arts or nature, Singaporeans had no qualms about showing off the different facets of their country with their photographic skills. One entry featuring Singaporean family life, warmed the hearts of the judges. As did another one - a dramatic portrait with its colour details and intense expressions. Tay Kay Chin, one of the judges, said: "I think this is a book that Singaporeans can be very proud of. It is first and foremost a community effort. I'm sure any professional photographer can go out and say I want to make a book about Singapore. But then, I don't think there's anything more meaningful than a bunch of Singaporeans from all walks of life just coming forward with their best images. It (the book) clearly reflects the diversity of life in Singapore - not from one person but from more than 100 persons." Most of the entries were focused on the love for people. And the judges are convinced Singapore's vibrancy shines through the entries. So does the affection of the photographers for their land. "To Singapore with Love" will be out in bookstores here and abroad in early July. There will also be exhibitions and events to celebrate its launch. links "To Singapore With Love" website has a list of photographers and photos featured (PDF file) in the book Related articles on Singapore's biodiversity status, threats, commercial applications of biodiversity |
