Newsroom 10 Mar 05 Turtle trafficking on the rise in Japan full report Excerpts Wild tortoise and freshwater turtle populations in Asia are being threatened by the growing pet trade in Japan, says TRAFFIC, the wildlife trade monitoring network. Japan is the largest importer of live tortoises for pets in the world. As a result, the impact of the pet market needs urgent assessment to ensure that the trade does not further threaten the survival of many tortoise species. Over half of Asia's tortoises and freshwater turtles are already considered threatened as a result of consumption for food and use in traditional medicines. links Related articles on Wildlife trade |
